For the rationalist it remains a pure abstraction, to the bare name of which we must defer. When the pragmatist undertakes to show in detail just why we must defer, the rationalist is unable to recognise the concretes from which his own abstraction is. Richard has argued against rationalism in few posts on his blog. I want to put forward few notes about how I see rationalism First, I think that rationalism is about is a belief that some universal truths (set vs. the truths about individual events and things) can be in principle understood – that is, rationalism is the view that one can not just know the universal truths. I've only been a rationalist for about 6 years now (give or take a year of deep reflection and questioning). But I've come to find that a strong and steady rationalism almost always negates superstition, and good critical thinking skills make requisite the challenge for me to find valid reasons for believing in something other than it being something that is ubiquitous among society and thus.
The Rationalist is an interesting twist on a story which has been told before but it isn't well done. Lauren does a lot of introspection, thoughtful preparation for likelihoods, and begins creating a personal belief system based on somewhat rationalist principles, which is why I consider her a rational protagonist and the book itself to be rational fiction.
